Gum Disease Treatment in Burr Ridge, IL

gum disease treatment - flossing Burr Ridge, ILIf you have received a diagnosis of “gum disease,” don’t despair. The fact is, this is a fairly common occurrence and nearly half of adults across the U.S. currently have some form of tis disease. Gum disease, or “periodontal disease,” is an issue that ranges from mild gum inflammation to a more serious problem that can result in significant damage to the bone and soft tissues that support your teeth. In the worst cases,  gum disease can result in losing some or all of your teeth.

The good news is that gum disease is treatable, and even curable in most cases. With the help of specialized treatments, our dental team can help you prevent, treat, and even reverse gum disease.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Your mouth is full of bacteria. This bacteria, as well as the mucus and other particles inside the mouth, constantly form the sticky, colorless “goo” on your teeth called plaque. Brushing and flossing your teeth several times a day helps to get rid of plaque; however, if this is not done, then it is going to harden and form a substance called “tartar” that brushing alone cannot get rid of. Over time, tartar will buildup beneath the gum line.

Symptoms You May Have Gum Disease

Some of the most common symptoms of gum disease include:

  •         Bad breath that just doesn’t go away
  •         Pain when chewing
  •         Teeth that appear longer than before
  •         Swollen or red gums
  •         Loose teeth
  •         Bleeding or tender gums
  •         Sensitive teeth

Each of these symptoms may be the sign of a serious issue, which needs to be addressed by your dentist right away.

If you have symptoms of gum disease, your dentist is likely going to perform a few tests to see if it is actually the case. They may check the pocket depth in your gums, do x-rays to check for bone loss, and suggest a treatment plan to ensure the situation doesn’t get worse.

Treatment Options for Gum Disease

The primary goal of treatment is to control the infection. The types and number of treatments needed is going to vary based on the extent of your gum disease. Any treatment used will require you to keep up great oral health habits at home. Additionally, the dentist or periodontist may make suggestions to help treat the disease, such as quitting smoking or visiting the dentist more than two times per year.

Deep Dental Cleaning

One of the most common types of treatments used for gum disease is a deep cleaning. Deep dental cleanings include “scaling and root planing” of your teeth. During this process, your dentist will remove the plaque present and scrap off all the tartar both above and below your gum line. The root planing helps to remove any rough spots on the root of the tooth were germs can gather, and removes bacteria that can make the problem worse. In some situations, a laser is used for removing the tartar.

If you believe you may suffer from gum disease, or just want to ensure it’s not a problem down the road, then contact us today to schedule an appointment. We can help you keep your mouth gum disease free with our routine checkups and provide treatment if you already suffer from periodontal disease.
